Screenshots: The Unappreciated Gem Of Modern ComputersFiled Under: Uncategorized
“Nothing illustrates like a web site”, someone said. So how do you illustrate a web site? Answer: with a screen shot, also called a screen capture.
Every operating system has a way of capturing a screen shot. And every method has its pros and cons. At the simplest, you can capture the entire content of your monitor – shortcuts, system tray – everything. On a more refined level, you can capture just the “active” window or program. And more refined still, with a combination of keys and “clicking-and-dragging”, just a section of any part of the screen you wish. Yes, that does mean any part of a visible web site too.
The act of “capturing” copies the graphic content to a “clipboard” or saved area, and that can then be turned into a completely separate file of any common graphic type. Once you’ve captured your screenshots, you can now insert them into a document, make a montage out of them, modify them with graphics software – your imagination is the limit.
There are free programs that enable screenshots, built-in ones and very sophisticated ones, for a price. They all have their advantages and disadvantages; they all have their potential for creativity and usefulness.
